Get Charged Up About Electric Cars!
Most people believe that the idea of the Electric car is “new”. They’re very wrong. The idea of the Electric car has been around since the 1840’s! They were first invented in France before we made them. Later, when gas cars were invented, even though Electric cars were more expensive, they were also more popular because they were quiet and less stinky. Also, gas cars were a pain to start. You had to crank them to get them to go. Electric cars are becoming popular again because we realize we are hurting the environment and causing Global Warming. A difficulty of having an Electric car is just being able to afford it! They have always been overpriced and it remains a problem. The benefits of having an Electric car are that they pollute a lot less and are quieter. They are better for the environment.
As I said, the first Electric car was invented in 1842 by the French. Everyone bought them in the 18-1900’s because they were quiet and people didn’t have to go far. People loved Electric cars, and few people bought gas cars. When the cost of gas went down, and we got better roads, gas cars got more popular because you could pay close to nothing for a couple gallons. Also, the better roads caused people to want to go further than Electric cars would allow. That was the main problem with Electric cars. When there was a gas shortage in the 1970’s, people’s interest in Electric cars was renewed because gas was sooooo expensive! The environmental consequence of cars is that carbon gets released into the atmosphere, causing Global Warming, or the Greenhouse Effect.
Here’s a fun riddle. Don’t worry, it’s easy! What can lift a thousand pounds a thousand meters, and fit inside a teacup?
1. Candy
2. Pancakes
3. Energy
4. Tea
5. Oil
The answer is……………….. OIL!!! Yes, oil is that powerful. But how did a resource like that get underground? Long ago, it was carbon in the air. A plant absorbed it and kept it. When the plant died it got covered with dirt and rocks on the bottom of the ocean, and “baked” by heat and pressure over millions of years into either oil or coal. We then dug up the oil/coal millions of years later and released the carbon back into the air, which caused Global Warming. Electric cars cause a lot less pollution.
The GM EV1 impact was when a new Electric car that everyone loved got invented. They had them for lease, or for rent. Later, under pressure from gas companies and car companies, they smashed them all. Not one was spared. The gas and car companies did not want to change, and they thought people would want them to sell Electric cars, and have charging stations. They were making a lot of money where they were and did not want to change and spend their money on something that might not make as much money as gas.
Electric cars are becoming more popular for the 3rd time in history because of Global Warming. People realize that we need to stop polluting! A Nissan Leaf can go 107 miles on 1 charge. It meets 90% of a typical driver’s needs. A Nissan Leaf generally costs between $15-$30,000. They are expensive but worth every penny. They seem small, but they fit 5 people with a big trunk for your luggage.
Electric cars are probably more overpriced the 100 years ago. If Electric car companies want to get their cars more popular, they should lower prices a LOT. The consequence of having gas cars is Global Warming will continue to get worse.
